Entry recommendations
To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:
- an interest in plants and how they grow
- a willingness to work outdoors in all weather
- good communication skills for working in a team
- care and attention when using machinery and tools
What will you learn?
You learn the routine work that keeps nurseries, gardens and parks going: identifying plants, planting trees and shrubs, spraying or pulling weeds, and spotting pests and diseases before they spread. Alongside that you pick up the practical basics of soils and growing media, safe use of basic machinery, and the workplace health and safety and sustainability habits that apply on any horticultural site. Most of the work is predictable and done under supervision, so it suits someone building confidence and a first foothold in the industry.
