Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

  • Providers can set their own conditions, such as a minimum age or a current job in the industry, and practical training may need a workplace placement. Check each provider above.
  • A licence or permit may be required where work is on electrical installations operating above 50 volt alternating current or 120 volt direct current. Without a licence or permit, a contract of training through an Australian Apprenticeship may be required. Licensing rules also vary between states and territories.

Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:

  • an interest in how electrical equipment and machinery works
  • careful, methodical work habits around live circuits
  • an ability to read drawings and follow standards
  • problem solving skills for tracking down faults

What will you learn?

You learn to read drawings and standards, wire and terminate low voltage circuits, connect control circuits, transformers and rotating machines, and track down faults when something stops working. The work stops at the machine: an electrical fitter is not authorised to install the wiring systems that run through a building. Most people complete this as an apprenticeship, because some states will only issue an electrical occupational licence once the qualification has been finished that way.
