To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:

  • an interest in helping people with their hearing
  • good communication skills
  • a careful approach to hygiene and safety
  • an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds

What will you learn?

Much of the work sits alongside the assessment itself: checking a client's physical health, explaining what each test involves, following infection control procedures and recording and sharing results. Graduates often work as hearing screeners or allied health assistants in hospitals, community health services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health organisations or industrial hearing programs, and some support clients in remote or isolated settings. The qualification does not cover prescribing or dispensing hearing aids, and it does not prepare anyone to practise independently.
