Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:

  • an interest in helping people manage their finances
  • good communication skills for explaining loan options
  • an eye for detail when checking paperwork
  • a commitment to ethical and compliant practice

What will you learn?

You learn to work out what a client actually needs, compare the loan options available, and put together an application a lender will assess, including the harder cases where income is irregular or the borrower's circumstances don't fit the standard form. Compliance and ethics run through the whole qualification, because broking sits under financial services and credit rules and the paperwork has to stand up to review. It also covers the supervising side of the work, for brokers running their own practice or managing a team under an aggregator.

  • Matching loans to client needs
  • Preparing loan applications
  • Complex loan structures
  • Credit for special circumstances
  • Financial services compliance
  • Ethics and risk in lending

Units of competency (10 core, 5 elective)

The qualification is made up of 15 units. Everyone completes the 10 core units below, and the remaining 5 are electives chosen from the list on training.gov.au, so they vary by provider. Select a unit to see what it covers.
