QA Tester

QA testers work through software before it ships, hunting for the ways it breaks so customers and support teams don't find them first.

QA testers run manual and automated checks against a set of test cases, then write up what fails clearly enough for a developer to reproduce and fix it. The role sits between development and release, and differs from software engineering in that the job is to find problems rather than build the feature, though the two work side by side through each sprint. Most work inside professional services, financial services or government IT teams, usually as part of an agile delivery squad.

How much do qa testers earn?

The median full-time salary for a qa tester is $131,900 per annum, before tax, up $27,500 since 2018.

What moves pay here is the type of testing and the sector. Testers who build automation, work in security or performance testing, or hold a security clearance sit higher than those doing manual checks only, and contract work pays a higher rate in exchange for no paid leave. Enterprise agreements in government and large financial services firms set their own bands.

What does a qa tester do day to day?

The list below is what fills most weeks; the exact mix shifts with seniority and whatever stage the current work is at.

  • Reading a feature specification and turning it into a set of test cases before any code is written
  • Working through those cases methodically, trying to break the feature the way a distracted user actually would
  • Writing up a defect with exact steps to reproduce it, because a vague report just bounces back to the developer
  • Re-running regression checks after every fix to confirm nothing else has broken
  • Keeping an automated suite running in Selenium, Postman or Azure DevOps, and updating the tests when the interface changes

What skills do qa testers need?

Employers look for software testing and QA, data analysis, business requirements analysis, backed by Selenium fluency and strong problem solving.

Is the job growing?

About 9,100 people work as qa testers in Australia, and employment is projected to grow 26.7% over the decade to 2035. That's very strong growth. Few roles in Australia are expanding this fast, and it points to solid demand for years to come.

How do you become a qa tester?

Here's the path most qa testers take, step by step.

  1. 1
    Build a technical base

A bachelor degree in IT, computer science or software engineering is the usual starting point, and it helps to understand how code is written and deployed before you try to test it. Diploma and certificate pathways also lead in, particularly when paired with a testing qualification.

  2. 2
    Learn testing as a discipline

The ISTQB Foundation Level certificate is the common entry credential and covers test design, test levels and how to write a defect report. It takes a few weeks of study and is recognised by most Australian employers.

  3. 3
    Add automation tooling

Selenium, Postman and a continuous integration tool such as Azure DevOps appear in most job ads, along with a scripting language, usually JavaScript, Python or Java. Learning one properly is more useful than sampling several.

  4. 4
Start in a junior or adjacent role

Entry is often a junior tester position or a graduate program, or a sideways move from IT support or development, where you already debug software and need structured testing practice rather than a new career.

  5. 5
    Specialise once you are in

Performance, security, accessibility and test leadership are the usual directions, and each is reachable through short courses and certification rather than a second degree.

Ready to apply as a qa tester?

Whether you're working toward becoming a qa tester or already are one and want a hand with the next step (sharpening your resume for ATS screening, tightening your cover letter, or knowing what you'll actually be asked at interview), here are examples grounded in this specific role, not generic templates.

What jobs can a qa tester move to?

Moving into Business Analyst typically comes with the biggest pay rise, worth $8,300 a year more on average.

What's it like being a qa tester?

The job runs on the delivery cycle: requirements arrive, test cases get written, the build lands, and there is a short window to find what is broken before release. Much of the week is methodical and fairly solitary, working through cases and re-running suites, with sharper bursts when something fails late and the team is waiting on you. It suits people who like being the one who notices, and who can stay even-tempered when the news they carry is unwelcome.

What people like

  • Finding what nobody else saw. Working out how a feature fails under a particular sequence of clicks is the puzzle at the centre of the job, and the defect you file often stops a customer ever seeing it.
  • A clear finish line. Each defect gets found, fixed and verified, so the work closes in a way that longer projects rarely do.
  • Room to specialise later. Automation, performance, security and accessibility testing are all reachable from a general testing start, usually through short courses rather than another degree.
  • Close to the product without owning the outage. You come to understand how the software works end to end, while the on-call pager when it falls over in production usually belongs to someone else.

What people find hard

  • The regression grind. The same checks run again with every release, and someone has to keep the automated suite passing even when the feature it covers has not changed.
  • Defects that stall. A report can come back as not reproducible, or be deferred to a later sprint, and the failure you spent an afternoon tracing never gets fixed.
  • Release-week compression. Testing sits at the end of the schedule, so when development runs late it is the checking time that gets squeezed.
  • Being brought in late. When testers only see a feature once it is built, the problems worth raising are design decisions that were settled weeks earlier.

Will AI replace qa testers?

Testing sits in the middle range for AI exposure. Tools can read a specification and draft first-pass test cases, and can write much of the repetitive automated script code, which takes real hours out of the routine parts of the job. What they cannot do is decide which failures actually matter, reproduce a bug that only appears under an odd sequence of user actions, or carry the sign-off on a release.

Common questions about becoming a qa tester

Straight answers to the questions people ask most.

How much do QA testers earn in Australia?

The median is $131,900 per year before tax, so half of full-time QA testers earn more than that and half earn less. Pay rises with automation, security and performance skills, and with contract work in financial services or government.

How do you become a QA tester?

Most people arrive with a degree or diploma in IT and add testing skills on top, often through the ISTQB Foundation Level certificate, which covers test design and defect reporting. A common route in is from IT support or development, where you already know how software fails and only need structured testing practice.

Are QA testers in demand in Australia?

QA testers are currently not in shortage, and employment is projected to grow 26.7% over the decade to 2035. For someone looking for work, the useful signal is that testing is part of every delivery team, and automation skills widen the range of roles you can apply for.

Will AI replace QA testers?

Not wholesale, but it is changing the parts of the job that follow rules. Tools can draft test cases from a specification and generate automated checks, while exploratory testing, judging which failures matter and tracing a defect back to its cause still need a person who understands the product.

What can a QA tester move into?

Testers often move into software engineering, where pay is about the same, since writing automated checks already means reading code closely, and into business analysis, which pays $8,300 more because tracing defects back to requirements is the same analytical work from a different seat. DevOps is another step, moving into the build and release pipeline itself after reskilling in cloud tooling.

Do you need a degree to be a QA tester?

It is the common background rather than a strict requirement: the most common qualification in the current workforce is a Bachelor degree, held by 53% of testers. People also enter through certificate and diploma pathways, and for a junior role a portfolio of automated tests plus an ISTQB certificate can count for more than the degree.
