Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:

  • an interest in building and fixing things
  • a careful approach to safety on site
  • good communication skills for working in a team
  • comfort with measurements and basic calculations

What will you learn?

You learn to use hand and power tools, take site measurements and do the calculations that go with them, read plans and specifications, and carry out basic levelling and simple concreting. Safety runs through the whole course, including working at heights and following workplace health and safety rules, and it covers the general construction induction training that anyone doing construction work needs. Many of the units are also required in Certificate III construction qualifications, so the training can count towards an apprenticeship if you decide to keep going.

Units of competency (10 core, 5 elective)

The qualification is made up of 15 units. Everyone completes the 10 core units below, and the remaining 5 are electives chosen from the list on training.gov.au, so they vary by provider. Select a unit to see what it covers.
