Entry recommendations
To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:
- an interest in working on rail tracks and structures
- a careful attitude to work health and safety
- good hand skills for using and looking after tools
- a willingness to work shifts, nights and weekends
What will you learn?
Students learn to use and look after hand tools, shift heavy materials without injury, and follow work health and safety procedures on and around the track. They also cover fatigue management, which matters because rail work often runs across shifts and nights, and the environmental rules that apply to working near rail corridors. It suits someone starting out in the industry, including on tram and light rail networks, and leads to roles such as track worker, track maintainer or plant operator.
