Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, it helps to have:

  • an interest in how things are made on a production floor
  • good communication skills for working with the people around you
  • a careful approach to measurements and calculations
  • a willingness to keep learning on the job

What will you learn?

You learn to read technical drawings, take accurate measurements, do the calculations a job needs, and use hand and power tools safely, then apply those skills to checking that products and materials meet the standards set for them. Much of the training happens on the job as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship, with off-the-job study filling in the theory, so the assessment reflects real production work rather than classroom exercises. It suits someone employed in a manufacturing environment, and it also builds the everyday skills around planning your own tasks, communicating with the people around you, using workplace computing systems and helping train newer workers.
