How to structure it

Opening

Name the role and, in one line, the strongest reason you're a fit. Skip the throat-clearing.

Middle

One or two paragraphs of real, specific evidence: what you did, and the result. This is where most letters go generic. Yours shouldn't.

Why this employer

One genuine, specific reason you want this job at this company, not any company. Vague enthusiasm reads as a template that wasn't customised.

Re: Application for Personal Trainer

I'm writing to apply for the Personal Trainer position at [Company Name]. Coaching clients through structured, measurable programs is the part of this work I find most satisfying, and it's what I'd bring to your team.

In a recent role I took on a client returning from a long period of inactivity, ran a full fitness and medical history assessment, then built a progressive strength program around their goals. I adjusted the plan each fortnight based on their feedback and performance, and kept detailed session notes so progress was easy to see and easy to talk about in check-ins.

[add one genuine, specific reason: a project, value, or market position you can point to] is what drew me to apply to [Company Name] specifically, rather than sending out a generic application.

Thank you for considering my application. I've attached my resume with more detail on my training background and client work, and I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I could fit into your team.

Getting it right

This is a starting point, not a guarantee of interviews. Make it specific to the actual employer before you send it.
